Bouyon in the Spotlight: Meet the Heavy-Hitters & New Faces at This Year’s CMAs

As Bouyon music continues its rise across the Caribbean and beyond, the Caribbean Music Awards once again shines a well-deserved spotlight on the genre’s leading voices. The coveted Bouyon Artist of the Year title returns this year with a powerful lineup of performers; a mix of established heavy-hitters and compelling new talent who are all driving the evolution of this distinctly Dominican sound.

Returning to defend his title is last year’s winner, Mr. Ridge, whose distinct style and consistency earned him the crown in 2024. Another familiar name, Asa Bantan, comes in hot after securing last year’s People’s Choice Award, further solidifying his widespread fan appeal and cultural influence within and beyond Dominica.

Also making repeat appearances in this competitive category are Triple Kay International, a band synonymous with the modern Bouyon movement, and Kenny G, who remains a raw and influential figure in the scene.

But this year’s lineup isn’t just about the veterans. It’s about the fresh energy shaking up the genre.  First-time nominees Trilla G, LittleBoy, and Quan have stormed onto the scene, each making individual strides but also teaming up for a viral collaboration, “Someone Else”, that landed them a second nomination in the Soca Song of the Year category. Their nominations signal a generational shift and the emergence of a new wave of Bouyon ambassadors.

Also earning his first nomination is Sheldon Alfred, best known as Shelly, the dynamic frontman of Dominica’s popular Signal Band. With his commanding stage presence and vocal flair, Shelly’s inclusion in this year’s lineup is a powerful reflection of the band’s growing impact and his emergence as a solo force in the genre.

The Bouyon Artist of the Year category remains one of the most anticipated titles of the night, not just for what it says about the artists’ current momentum, but for what it signals about the future of the genre. With the mix of seasoned performers and rising stars, 2025’s shortlist is proof that Bouyon music is in a vibrant, evolving, and exciting place.

Who will take the title this year? Fans, critics, and the entire Caribbean music community will be watching closely.
