The Bouyon powerhouse Signal Band dominated the spotlight on Saturday, January 3rd, sweeping an impressive six awards at the second edition of the Dominica Music Awards, held at the elegant Intercontinental Resort & Spa. The highly anticipated ceremony brought together many of Dominica’s top local acts, creatives, and influencers for a night dedicated to celebrating Dominican music, culture, and innovation.
Signal Band’s commanding presence and consistent impact on the Bouyon scene were undeniable. They captured the coveted Band of the Year title, while their electrifying album “Electric Room” earned Album of the Year. Their powerful visual storytelling was also recognized, with Music Video of the Year going to their hit single “Bye to the Old Me.”
Frontman Shelly had a standout night of his own, securing Songwriter of the Year and Male Artist of the Year, further solidifying his status as one of Dominica’s most influential musical voices. Rounding out the band’s historic sweep, manager Jerlani Robinson was honored as Manager of the Year, highlighting the strong team behind Signal Band’s continued success.
Beyond Signal Band’s dominance, the awards celebrated excellence across genres and generations. Pudaz was named Bouyon Artist of the Year, while rising stars were acknowledged with Tyce Faustin (Mighty T) winning Junior Male Artist of the Year and Shervez Seaman (Moxey Shervy) earning Female Junior Artist of the Year.
The night was equally momentous for Black Island Girl, as CEO Jael Joseph took home the award for Social Media Influencer/Content Creator of the Year. The recognition underscores Jael’s impact in digital storytelling, cultural promotion, and amplifying Dominican creatives on a global stage.
Other notable winners included Bouyon Barbie Faithii as Female Artist of the Year, DJ MJ as DJ of the Year, Real Reel as Rising and Emerging Band/Artist of the Year, and Mr Ridge as Producer of the Year. Behind-the-scenes contributors were also celebrated, with Media Linx receiving Photographer/Videographer of the Year and Sean Shillingford honored as Live Music Engineer of the Year.
Special recognition was given to cultural icons, with the Felix Henderson Award for the Preservation of Creole Culture presented to Sonia Magloire Akpa, and the Iconic Award bestowed upon legendary music producer Krishna “Dada” Lawrence. Lifetime Achievement Awards honored pioneers including Ophelia and the late Fitzroy Williams, David Benjamin, Nassio Fontaine, Jerry Lloyd, Ian Jackson, and Bouyon bass guitarist Keith Goddard.
With performances, accolades, and heartfelt tributes, the second edition of the Dominica Music Awards proved to be a powerful celebration of Dominican talent. Signal Band’s sweeping victory not only marked a defining moment for the group but also underscored the strength and global potential of Bouyon music.
