A New Face for Roseau North: DLP Ratifies Ashma McDougall Ahead of By-Election

By Sémaj Bernard

An official announcement from the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) on Monday night has confirmed a major political development for the Roseau North constituency.

This follows the resignation of Parliamentary Representative Hon. Miriam Blanchard, who stepped down for health reasons after years of service to the constituency and the wider Commonwealth of Dominica.

In the announcement, the DLP revealed that businesswoman, economist, and educator Ashma McDougall has been unanimously ratified as its candidate for Roseau North, paving the way for a by-election expected in the coming weeks.

According to the party, McDougall’s ratification was endorsed by its National Executive Committee after she received an unopposed nomination from the Roseau North Constituency Association — a move signalling strong internal support for her candidacy.

McDougall, a daughter of the constituency born in Bath Estate and now living in Goodwill, described the moment as both humbling and an honour. In her statement, she pledged to work tirelessly for the advancement and upliftment of the people of Roseau North.

“I am humbled and honoured by the vote of confidence reposed in me by the Dominica Labour Party, the Roseau North Constituency Association and the many constituents who have encouraged me to step forward at this important time,” she said.

She added that she remains committed to listening, learning, and working alongside residents to strengthen communities and create meaningful opportunities.

An economist, entrepreneur, and youth advocate, McDougall has held several leadership roles, including President of the National Youth Council of Dominica and Executive Director of the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce. Her work in youth empowerment and economic development has earned both national and regional recognition.

Prime Minister and Political Leader of the DLP, Roosevelt Skerrit, also gave his full endorsement in the announcement, describing McDougall as part of the party’s commitment to bringing capable and forward-thinking individuals into leadership.

“Ashma’s candidacy reflects the Dominica Labour Party’s continued commitment to attracting capable, energetic and forward-thinking individuals who are prepared to contribute to the country’s development and improve the lives of its citizens,” Skerrit said.

With the by-election now constitutionally due and campaign details expected to be announced over the weekend, political attention is quickly turning to Roseau North as the constituency prepares for its next chapter.
